CLOSE are delighted to have opened two concurrent solo exhibitions The Fugitives and Aloof by the late Jane Harris (1956-2022).
On the evening of the 3rd July, we held an intimate gathering to open our new Marylebone Project Space with a selection of paintings and works on paper by Harris. Curated by Freeny Yianni, with an in conversation by art advisor Prue O'Day and founder of AWITA, Sigrid Kirk, guests explored a concise survey of Jane Harris's work on an intimate scale. Aloof centres on Harris's lifelong exploration of light, surface and repetition. This previously unseen body of work subtly balances restraint and presence, drawing the viewer into a rich interplay of materiality and illusion. The title, coined by her son George, reflects Harris's generosity and playful spirit. Her distinctive style, meticulously executed yet deceptively minimal, is presented in a thoughtful display that captures the quiet power and intimacy of her vision.Open by Appointment until 31st July 2025.

The Fugitives opened at CLOSE Gallery in Somerset on the 5th July and we were so pleased to be joined by Harris's family and close friends along with many of her admirers, who have followed her remarkable career. Her large-scale works take centre stage - these ambitious paintings reveal her exceptional command of visual rhythm and her subtle theatricality, with surfaces that shimmer and shift as the viewer moves. From the flicker of the Somerset light to the shifting rhythm of Harris’s visual language, the day was a beautiful tribute to her enduring legacy.
