Christabel Blackburn’s move from London to Somerset has quietly transformed her paintings in this series. The pensive figures she has become known for, once set against the rigid forms of the city, now find themselves in gentler company. A bucolic landscape, a stretch of water. What hasn’t changed is the invitation at the heart of her work: to inhabit the space of her paintings. In these new paintings those clean lines and concrete have been replaced by textural energetic brush strokes of verdant greens. Blackburn’s spaces strive to be timeless, direct statements of what it feels like to inhabit a place - capturing a duality between calm and what could be read as loneliness, and giving her paintings a quiet tension.
