Overview

We are pleased to present Katherine Perrins, our artist in residence, as she opens her studio for the duration of 'Brian Rice: Red, Black and White', 21 Jan - 18 Feb 2023. Perrins has been working on a new series of oil paintings, titled Many Lines of Luminous Things, following on from her exploration of interior domestic spaces, capturing life at home with young children.

" This series examines the abstract shapes created by a series of white clothes hanging outside to dry on a hot sunny afternoon. The paintings zoom into the laundry and I wanted to create the child-like sensation of running through, and getting lost within the clothes. Following the lines of my practice’s concerns with the rituals of domestic life, and an on-going fascination with the rhythms of the everyday; this body of work allowed me to focus in on the sensuality of the areas of luminous light within the laundry. The quotidian clothes peg became shimmering and haloed as the light caught them; playful and comical. The large canvas allowed me to push the washing to become truly abstracted in places; the paint became thicker and areas of light and shade opened up. Paintings where some of the children’s nappies and prints appear bunched and in close rows speak to my interest in the paradox of motherhood; here is an unspeakable tenderness and love, but the web and entanglement of parenthood.
