Negative space drawings of Ebbor Gorge ash branches, from trees felled due to ash dieback disease.
For many years Scott has worked with charcoal dust to create large scale, temporary drawings, which shift and disintegrate over time. Ash Limbs is the first of a new series for Scott, using lime plaster as a means of holding and fixing her drawings. Charcoal dust is applied onto wet lime plaster (made using lime Scott created in 2021 from Portland stone), creating a negative space drawing. As the lime plaster sets it draws the charcoal dust into its surface and hardens through a process of carbonisation.
Uniting the carbon of Mendip ash trees with the carbon of Portland lime, Ash Limbs speaks of ecological loss and the interconnected nature of organic matter.
