Ate Tate is the landscape as still life: a huddle of disperate objects, apparently trees but they may as well be humans. They are set in an empty vista. Whether the cluster is welcoming (can we join them?) or forbidding (if so, will we be seen again?) is unclear. It is the tension between a landscape’s wonder set against its potential for menace that I am drawn to.
