Homage marks a quieter, more introspective moment in my practice. Taken on the early October evening at my 4 Chapel Market studio, it signified an era for me. My years returning to the UK (from a stint in NYC) and this being my first official office space, will always hold a special radiant place in my heart. These flowers I bought at a Hackney florist, touched me, so much I constructed a mini set around them, all indicative of how I felt at the time. Gold for the power they gave me. Wooden blocks to signify how we build on life and the brush, to not forget how the humble wooden slate became golden. I shot this still life over a couple of days, being delighted the flowers were loosing their youthfulness, this impacted me more. A happy accident, the street light that came through the window in the early evening, gave the final touch to my composition, giving me the gold light that reflected my emotions at the time.
Tactility is central to my meaning. Printed on Hahnemühle paper and mounted on aluminium, the image floats within its frame, suspended - as if the moment itself has been gently captured. I have always been interested in a slice of time and allowing it to exist with presence and weight, not as an image to be consumed, but as something to be held, seen and felt.
