Landscape is a recurring element in Dien Berziga’s practice, particularly in his large-scale paintings, where it becomes entwined with nostalgia and the movement of his brushstrokes. He attempts to depict landscapes with an almost unwavering simplicity, drawing upon places he has seen or partially remembers. Grand River traces a distant, indistinct memory of the landscape of northeast China. Because the recollection itself is so vague, the image does not emerge as a faithful reconstruction. Instead, it appears unexpectedly through the act of painting, shaped as much by bodily movement and the rhythm of the brush as by memory.
