Every time I returned briefly to Singapore over several years, I would visit the same Taoist temple. The building had such high thresholds that everyone who entered had to pause and lift their legs. I spent many days in the sweltering heat, watching and photographing women as they crossed those thresholds, from the realm of the street into the sacred realm. It seemed to me then, as it does now, that the women’s elegant steps embodied a message to offer women free passage through the world. I hope and pray that women will continue to find and enter new worlds as humanity begins to mature.
