Chuck Elliott // Coda at Close

Artist / Chuck Elliott has been making digital images since the late eighties. An early adopter in the digital revolution, he claims to have used the first Apple computer imported to the UK. Over the last six years his output has continued in a line of ever more fl uid digital abstractions. His work coalesces a desire to use the latest digital technologies with a strong sense of his place in the tradition of colour space and abstract geometrical art, spanning back to Vasarely, Riley, Gabo and Kandinsky. The latest works combine a shimmering planar surface with his trademark liquid geometries and fl uid colour dynamics. Less overtly geometric than earlier shows, the new works take on an asymmetrical and more fl uid feel than many of his more tightly controlled earlier works.

Close House provides an elegant, understated foil for the works and shows the potential of installing contemporary art within an historic interior. In direct contrast to the ubiquity of a white cube gallery space, Coda at Close delivers a show of works at once domestic in scale and transcendent enough to inspire. It’s easily his best show of work to date.

Venue / Close House is a beautiful 1750’s hunting lodge and contemporary art space, in Somerset. Close is owned and managed by Freeny Yianni (ex Lisson Gallery). Freeny’s intention is to create a vibrant art space, with a programme of emerging and established contemporary art, both at Close House and within a new industrial space at the docks in Bridgwater. With her extensive experience and connections, the project looks set to become one of the West Country’s liveliest venues for contemporary art.
